haha. i see. i see. I will be doing popping also. Currently using a tournament s 4000. Do you think a certate 2500 will survive there? From what i heard of the bottom fishing, the depth is about 40 only. So even spinning reels can do the trick? | |

| Super Moderator | bro... you can tell the boatman you want parrot fish/golden trevally but bear in mind their bottom fishing spot isn't the same as their sailfish spots. So you might want to plan for a day of Sailfish action and another for bottom fishing. alamak... twinpower 3000 and certate 2500 machiam sama sama size leh... bring a Stella 1000 go and catch sotong at FAD while waiting for Sailfish is best lar |

| Super Moderator | Boatman there use sinker to bring the egi down fast... so just do what he says. Bright orange and green egi seems to work well there As for your tackle... just use the Tournament S4000 for both days |

| Junior Member | Re: Rompin Questions by a Newbie. Look for a short rod of 5ft-6ft, because the boats in Kuala Rompin are fast fibreglass boats with a canopy that protects you from the tropical sun but restricts the use of long rods. It should be in the 15lb-40lb or 20lb-50lb class, suitable for use with 20lb-30lb line. Use at least a 20lb class line, preferably 30lb. Though lighter lines can handle the sailfish of Rompin (as they are usually below 40kg), these often result in long drawn-out fights thaMatch this rod with a suitable reel that can hold 300m of 30lb line. With today’s braided line, this reel is relatively smaller than those used in days gone by. Just be sure that the reel is tough enough to handle a 30lb class line. A conventional multiplier will be much lighter and more powerful than a spinning reel of the same class but you should use whatever suits you. The braided line is recommended as the sailfish can strip off more than 150m of line on its first run. Braided lines, with its almost non-stretch property and super sensitivity, will keep you in touch with the fish at all times. Mono stretches as much as 25%, and this can make it difficult to pump the fish in, especially when the sailfish is more than 100m away. The use of a mono or fluorocarbon leader is absolutely necessary as the bill of the sailfish is rough like sandpaper and can work through a braided line. The leader should be at least 2m in length to protect against the bill and long enough for the deck hand to leader in the fish at the end of the fight. An 80lb leader will work well and can last a few sailfish, but be sure to check for wear and tear after every fish and change it if necessary. The commonly used method in Kuala Rompin is to drift live bait off the stern of the boat, with the help of a balloon or a light weight, depending on the weather conditions. A breeze will help move the balloon out, while a strong current will require the use of the weight to get the bait away from the boat. When the action is slow, trolling live baits with a couple of teasers out may attract the fish. Teasers are commonly used, though poppers, without hooks, work too. Poppers can also be used to attract the sailfish to the boat when the boat is parked or when trolling slowly. Whatever the method, make sure to use circle hooks with live bait as this will ensure that the sailfish is hooked at the corner of the jaw almost every time, allowing for a safe release. J hooks should not be used because they may lead to the death of this magnificent sport fish. Another big advantage of circle hooks is that the hook-up rate is much better and there is no need to count the seconds before setting the hook, something that is necessary with the J hook. Popping is another method that is catching on. Though the hook-up rates are lower, the sheer number of sailfish makes it a more challenging style of fishing. Using live bait can be boring when the sailfish are hitting them the moment you put them in the water. On one of my trips, none of the bait lasted more than a minute before being taken. When popping for sailfish, change the trebles to single hooks. This not only makes it easier to release the fish later, but gives a better hook-up rate. When you are hooked onto a sailfish, try to be calm and just hold onto the tackle while the fish strips off the line. Many a first-timer has told me that they missed the show because they were too involved with the fighting, so relax and enjoy the aerial display, the acrobatic leaps, tail walks and the sheer speed of the line parting the water. When the fish has slowed down to a crawl, then you start pumping it in by lifting your rod tip to an 11 o’clock angle and cranking in the line as you lower the rod tip. The fish will make another run or two. Enjoy the fight and watch out for another leap or two before the sailfish gives up. Once near the boat, the fish will have changed colour from bright electric blue to a beautiful copper. This is a sign of lactic acid build-up – not good for the fish, but not fatal. Photo sessions should be done quickly. Keep the fish in the water, lifting just the head and part of the body out of the water by the bill. I personally think this is a more natural photograph than one with the billfish lying across the lap of the angler. The fish in the water looks alive while the fish out of water is . . . well, just that, a fish out of water, looking dead. Moving a large fish completely out of the water can cause serious damage to the fish. Before releasing the sailfish, revive it by towing it with the boat moving slowly, forcing water through its gills. Keep it upright and release it only when it is able to swim on its own. __________________ อ่อนโยน Gerald 昨天好象是一场梦 , 今天是另一个梦的开始 - Yesterday is like a dream, Today is the beginning of new dream. ![]() |
