reels - do we need to check in???

Hi all,
We are going to Jarkarta via Garuda, do we need to check in our reels or can we simply just hand carry ? My last trip up Sarawak requires me to check in our reels so does Indonesia has the same policy???
thanks

I dont think you need to check in when flying Garuda from Changi Airport but you are right that Malaysia (from Senai - Johor Bahru) you are required to check in your fishing reels.

Cheers,
Edy

Thanks, Edy. A real relief now knowing that we can carry our precious reels by our side.

As long as there's no tools in the hand carry bag... the airport staff shouldn't stop you from carrying the reels by hand. If they ask you to check in the reels, ask them if they're willing to pay for damages and they'll most probably let you through. Would help if you tell the guy your reels are about a grand per piece.

I'm with Mikey on this one. As long as your hand carry is within the weight limit permitted and you do not have a prohibited item, I don't see why they should insist that the reels go in cargo.

At the worst case, like when I brought a golf club on board once using an SQ flight from Vancouver, the crew hold it for you in the cabin area and give it back to you when you land.

In terms of telling them the price of the reels, I would pick and choose on that one, depending on the airline, the departure location and your destination. In some places you can get mugged and worse for less than a grand dude...... Just ask them the damages question and what the limit is that the airline will cover.... That usually befuddles them and gets them worried.

Hi Kelvin,

Black Marlin obtained a written reply from MAS, confirming that fishing reels are permitted in hand carry luggage. Perhaps you could send an email to Garuda, will be good to carry a document to support your case if the ground staff try to be difficult.

cheers,

mark

Try going along that line when in Indonesia, especially Bali .... a grand a piece will sound like an evergreen hit to Pak Fredrik's ears!

But i know that Malaysia from Senai Airport, the custom officer will insists you to check in your reel. In fact they are pretty anal about it.

I think i should apply an "amulet" which i could use to stop those "zombies"

Yo bro,

One grand a piece...wonder how much security deposit that will be according to Pak Fredrik's formula? The last time I told him our entire arsenal was worth SGD1000 and he wanted me to leave USD500 with him

We gotta think of a way to deal with Fredrik...hmmm, you think getting the trolly boys will help?

Yo Edy,

Robert and his group managed to get through senai last month without depositing their reels in the check-in.

Hi Mark,

Correction, our group left for Sabah via Sin on MAS flight and all hand-carried their reels.

If carrying stuff like Penn International Game Reel or Fin Nor Game Reel, do not check in.

No fun arriving at fishing destination to find all the gold-plated equipment missing. And when the airline staff give you that pretend don't know dumb ass look, it gets even more infuriating.

Any anglers lost their reels when they check-in? Why so reluctant?

Ya, I think an official looking doc would fright the hell off those trying to take advantage. Thanks mate.
On another matter, while coming back Senai, one of our kakis' DIY rod case was broken off one end (sort of like run over by something) but thank God, no rod or guides was damaged only the case while our Plano cases were ok. I guess them people thot the DIY look easy to 'open up'.

cheers 2
