arowana,

Many big fishes have been landed with smaller single speed reels like the Accurates, Shimanos or Daiwas. Fishing with 65-85lbs braided lines are consider heavy and can anytime catch 'big' fish that would give the angler severe back problems. Like Makaira mentioned, it's feels less stressing to reel up a 1kg sinker using a good single speed reel than a 2 speed reel.

Unless you intend to catch big buggers of more than 200kgs, i suggest you re-consider and get yourself an Accurate, Jigger, Kaikon or Daiwa Saltiga.

Cheers!

Hi Arowana,

To begin with, why do you feel the need to get a game reel to do bottom fishing? For the application you are looking at, bottom bashing with heavy braided line, you can forget about the graphite frame reels like the TLD 2 speed. When I say heavy braided line, I mean lines above 65lbs test or PE 6.

A 2 speed game reel reel will NEVER out-crank the smaller well-designed single speed reels of today e.g the Saltiga, Ocea & the Accurate Boss. Trying cranking up a size 32 sinker from 100m of water & you will know what I mean. For the game reel, you will have to resort to cranking in low gear & you will still be sweating away when the other reel has brought the rig up, re-baited & on the way back to the bottom.

The only reason I personally use a 2 speed a reel like the Tiagra, Penn International, Accurate Platinum or Avet EX for bottom fishing is when I want a reel built like a tank, not having to worry about anti-reverse bearing failure because I will be using very, very high drags e.g. 25lbs & above, & I will be doing most of my cranking with the rod in the holder.

IMHO, you really need to sit back & think properly what your needs are before committing to any set of gear. This hobby we have is certainly not cheap when you reach a certain level. Don't buy the wrong thing & end up having to live with it, or sell it at a loss to buy another set -- something that happens quite a lot with some members of this forum
Just my 2 cents worth on this subject.

Best regards,
Makaira
Ouch...that hurts.

Arowana dude,

Let me suggest a great back up rig for your purposes....

Its called a 400lb Handline....

Seriously, with a suitably long 200-400lb handline, a pair of gloves and the comfort of the "I'm gonna tie it to the rig you motherf*!#er" drag system, huge fish have been landed from rigs here.... I mean grouper on the 200kg range have been landed, albeit that the "gaff" used in the end consisted of a tail rope and the derrick crane.

Aside from that, the boys have given a bunch of good advice anyway. Don't forget a few sabiki rigs to jig livebait.

Regards,

Saimee

Bro DFM, We have those freaking lines onboard coiled to those damn huge diameter wooden rollers. Putting it down is easy, coiling them up.... Its not a JOKE!!That's why they use those extreme heavy duty gears to crank up those motherf*!#er". And by the way, their freaking tackles have not been maintained for donkey years yet proven operational

Best Regards,
