Popping Outfit

Hi kakis,

I have another question.... I would like to acquire a popping outfit. I have shortlisted a rod, which is Zenaq Trevally. The specifications are as follows:

Model: FC83-7 Trevally
Length: 8'3"
Section: Offset Handle
Length: 183
Max Lure Weight: 180 grams
Ideal Lure Weight: 100-150 grams
Line Weight: PE6-8

This is a new model of a higher weightage.

Model: FC80-10 Trevally
Length: 8'
Section: Offset Handle
Max Lure Weight: 230
Ideal Lure Weight: 120-200
Line Weight: PE7-10

I will prefer to choose the latter one. I have seen lots of popping videos and most anglers use approx 200 grams poppers. Is there a reason why? Can a 200 grams popping outfit "conquer" the Asia waters including Maldives?

Any other good rods to recommend too...

Thank you very much for your advice.

Is the combination pausible?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Popping Outfit

Without seeing the rods, and purely my opinion, I would choose the lighter of the 2 rods assuming your primary place to pop is Maldives, or Maldives-type place. Asia is pretty big you know....

That said, the heavier rod would suit your Saltiga 6000GT or the SW more because these reels are HEAVY.

Choices choices...

Hi Zeck,

I am novice in Popping. Hence, for a beginner set, i hope to get a more fishable combo in most waters. This shall be my stepping stones for a better set in future. So what do you recon for a so called "multi-purpose" set in this case? The reel and rod for example....

Thanks a lot.

Re: Popping Outfit

For popping always start with a lighter set as it is a demanding type of fishing technique ... casting against the wind and working the popper to have the right effect is hard work!

If you have a lighter/medium set, you could cast better and also enjoying the process.

Of course your set must match with the weight of the popper you intended to pop with.

Re: Popping Outfit

cw, hard for me to suggest an outfit for you without knowing where you intend to fish. I am also not exactly in the know when it comes to the latest and best-est. Let's put it this way - I am still using a 1996 Daiwa spinning reel and a 1999 popping rod. Since 1999.

Ping Mike. He is where I turn to for advice when I want to buy tackle.

What I can say however is - when it comes to popping, you need to cast in order to get a chance that a fish will bite. Casting is the other half. And then, it depends on the terrain. DO you need to stop the fish in 2 seconds else you lose it to reefs? Is the boat always moving in search of fish? How many days are you fishing? For example, tackle for the Komodos and for the Maldives are very different. And both are in Asia.

Goodluck!

Re: Popping Outfit

CW,

MHO and experience..Popping outfit for GTs'.....i presume...??

Consider this...Popping is about casting as in most lure fishing. Go for outfits that suits your style of fishing.

Casting 200grms poppers the whole day is no walk in the park. However, if you are comfortable with casting 200grms popper the whole day...then choose the 200grm outfit...otherwise choose the other.

200grm poppers does not always equates to big GTs....but for me it means i get tired really fast...
Have caught my fair share of decent size GTs' on smaller poppers...no fix rules in fishing i guess...

Have tried casting 170grms poppers....after 10 mins...went back to my 100, 120 and 130grms poppers. Personally, i am more comfortable casting 80 to 130grms poppers.

Ultimately,,,it boils down to what you want... one of the reasons why there are so many class of rods to choose from.

Don't be too concern about ppl using big poppers..does not mean you will not land your monster GT on a smaller popper..

Hope it helpful to you.

Opinions differ, of course.

Rob

Re: Popping Outfit

Buddy, if you can spare a couple of hours this Sunday when we meet up, I'll let you try casting my popping outfits. I've got light to really heavy outfits so you can figure out first hand what suits you. Some how I think you'll lean towards the light-moderate outfits

Re: Popping Outfit

Hi edylie, Zeck and Robsen,

Thanks so much for your advice.

Hi Mikey,

I have short listed a rod.

It is Zenaq FC83-7 Trevally. Line weight is at PE6-8. Length is at 8'3" with Offset Handle.

Max lure weight is at 180 grams.

I hope this is still a reasonable set.

See you this sunday.

Thanks.

Regards,
CW
