| Member | Was very impressed with the recent Rodrigues Island Catch Report especially those dogtooths, can anyone help me with the following questions: 1) what's the difference when you catch a dogtooth by jigging and by bottom fishing? 2) where would u recommend for an amateur to do jigging? (please don't recommend me bjt jig tamban) 3) Which type of reel is better for jigging?? (Spinning or ...) Thank you and look forward to any answers for the above questions!

| Administrator | Hi Sashimi, 1) what's the difference when you catch a dogtooth by jigging and by bottom fishing? Bottom fishing is a waiting game, drop the bait and wait but jigging is you are anticipating a strong pull anytime when you crank the line ... and initial pull is really amazing!!! 2) where would u recommend for an amateur to do jigging? (please don't recommend me bjt jig tamban) A good place to start with, could be Pekan or Rompin. In fact i have good success jigging in TG Pinang. 3) Which type of reel is better for jigging?? (Spinning or ...) Personally I preferred overhead for jigging ... it is just a matter of habit. Cheers, Edy |

My Mood: Rep Power: 6 ![]() ![]() | Hi Sashimi, Nice CRs you've been putting up 1) what's the difference when you catch a dogtooth by jigging and by bottom fishing? Jigging is a more active form of fishing. I think the charm about jigging, popping and any form of lure fishing is in being able to entice or fool the fish into striking your artificial. Personally feel more satisfaction when I get a big fish on an artifical than on bait. And like Edy has mentioned the strike is awesome! It's like running as fast as you can and suddenly hitting a brick wall 2) where would u recommend for an amateur to do jigging? (please don't recommend me bjt jig tamban) If you have the means, I think nothing beats Samson jigging as an introduction to the sport. It's great jigging at Rottnest, plenty of very good sized fish and they respond very well to jigs most of the time. Pull quite hard too! I'm sure Samson jigging will get you all fired up 3) Which type of reel is better for jigging?? (Spinning or ...) Like Edy, i'm more accustomed to an overhead set up. It's a personal choice but I do note an increasing trend in overhead popularity for jigging even among Japanese anglers. Several tackle manufacturers have recently introduced or are about to introduce purpose designed overhead jigging reels. More recently we have the Pro Gear Oceanus and Alutecnos Gorilla. I understand that both Avet and Accurate have purpose built jigging reels in the pipeline too. Not referring to the current Boss Accurate here. For really big fish on jig, the Team Atomic Sword guys who are chasing the world record of 104kg for dogtooth tuna on jig use only trolling reels like the Accurate ATD 6/12 and Shimano Tiagra 30. I understand from one of their team members that they are currently testing a special tuned version of the Shimano Tiagra for vertical jigging too tight lines Last edited by MarkR : 17-11-2006 at 04:07 PM. |

| Member | that's a quick response!!! thanks so much MarkR... i'm kind of attracted to jigging after seeing all those nice Catch Report. i understand that the equipment for jigging is totally different from bottom, do you have any model/brand to recommend for a good jigging set that can take on those monster fishes?? let's juz ignore pricing first...

My Mood: Rep Power: 6 ![]() ![]() | Hi Sashimi, I think it's impossible to say which brand/model is best becasue they all have their good points. HOTs rods are exceptionally light, Sevenseas very good for light short jigs and very powerful blanks, Jigging Master good for long and heavy jigs...it's quite difficult to say which is best I think what's important in deciding the type of tackle to get is to consider primarily a) target species, b) area/location, c) type of jig- long vs short and d) jig weight- light jigs vs heavy jigs. Cheers |

| Administrator | When in doubt just get the most expensive ones Usually I am using Ishidai Z40 with Bluerose 51SD Rompin - you could get small coral trouts, tenggiri and other small coral fish on jig Tg Pinang - Cobia, Skipjack and Big Eye Trevally Cheers, Edy |
