Hi Lod,

You should send your reel in to see what they can do for you. Perhaps you could have asked Mark or Jason bring it to S'pore for servicing after the trip and they can Fedex it back to you, or AO can include it in their regular shipments to their JKT agent after it is done.

Best regards,
Makaira

I can't be certain if the AG aftermarket handles are made of stronger material than stock Boss handles...anyway stock Boss handles appear a little short for jigging and a little thin to me even though Accurate has increased the thickness and handle length several times over the years. However it does seem like the material AG uses is stronger than the material used for the aftermarket offset handle the local Accurate agent carries…otherwise, it may well be a design issue…not the first time I've seen problems with this offset handle.

Fitting an aftermarket AG handle on a Boss reels involves a change of the original gear shaft as well. This is because the stock gear shaft has "2 straight and 2 curved edges" whereas the AG aftermarket shaft has a square cross section or 4 straight edges. Likewise, the “female part” on the AG aftermarket handle is a square hole, different from the offset handle the local Accurate agent carries. The fit of a square male and female part could be better perhaps? More contact surface and load distribution? Furthermore, it seems like the stock gear shaft does not sit deep in the offset aftermarket handle from the agent...overall I feel that the fit of the AG gear shaft and AG handle is deeper and more secure for jigging but must say that there is less wobble when jigging with an offset handle...strangely AG doesn't seem to manufacture an offset version for the Boss reels

Tight lines
IMO the failure could be because the anglers pull or balance using the handle that causes the added pressure on to the screw and with the after market handle being aluminum which is pretty soft the chances of wearing off ard that "2 straight & 2 curved edges" does increase.. next is the lock screw that is at the side of the bigger screw that holds the handle on to the reel, even thou its supposed to be a lock screw to prevent the bigger screw from loosening it didn't quite serve its purposes simply because it wasn't sitting right at the edge of the bigger screw (refer to drawing), so when the bigger screw moves alittle even if its 1 mm together with the "wrong" way of handling the reel chances of it coming loose or breaking is very high, one way to get ard it is to have something like the Torium handle which not only have the lock screw it even had a pc of bracket to hold on to screw hence preventing it from even moving 1mm. hope you guys managed to figure out what i'm talking abt..

Cheers
Mark

p.s. try attaching a pic to explain but wouldn't upload it because the allowed kb for such file is only 19.5kb..

Hey Mark,

Nice trip

Get what you mean, great analysis. Pulling back on the handle on overhead reels can also cause anti-reverse failure, bad habit but a lot of guys are guilty of it No such problems with spinning reels usually, pull back on a stella and saltiga handle and it may come loose

Yes, the handle nut retainer/washer idea is good...more secure for sure.

cheers,

MarkR

Re: Perth Weather????

Juz got the reel back from AO....Great sales service of free servicing and replacment of shaft and nut for each of the reels sent in....
One even had its power handle changed FOC......

I agreed with mark for the bad habit of pulling the handle together with the rod with fighting a fish might be the cause of the failure....

Cheers
Jason

Re: Perth Weather????

Yo Jason,

AO fixed the problem with the handle so I personally wouldn't bother getting the AG parts

Between the 4000P and 665, which do you prefer for jigging?

Cheers

PS. Dying for a Catch Report dude

Re: Perth Weather????

Yo MarkR

I still prefer 665 for jigging.....Kinda of lighter and well balanced for me ....
I tried jigging with Vincent Jigger but cannot get the rythem of jigging doing the under arm....
For the Catch Report, I am still waiting for Edmund and co to do ....Hahahhaaha!!!!!

Cheers
Jason

Re: Perth Weather????

Jason, if you gather that its due to bad habit of pulling the handle while pumping then why bother to change the handle to AG, BG or whatever??? the thing that you should change wasn't supposed to be your pumping style?

Re: Perth Weather????

Yo Jason ...........Just bear in mind that whatever conversion you do that is not "sanctioned", so to speak, by Accurate, voids all warranty.

Re: Perth Weather????

Yo mark and makaira

I hope i can changed my fighting tactic ...hahahahah!!!!
But find it hard to change away the gunwhale tactic which I am so used to...Hahhahahaha!!!!
Ya ,I understand that warranty voids....Maybe I juz give the Accurate one more try before I think of the conversion.

Re: Perth Weather????

dun mention thanks.. cos IMHO the most satisfying thing being a organiser on a fishing trip is to have everyone fullfill their dreams of landing whatever that we set out to land and for this case everyone should have more or less fullfilled it, so guess its more a relieve for me then anything...

Cheers
