OT: Use "Japanese" instead of "Jap"

Some years back I was corrected by an Allcoast member for using the word "Jap" in one of my posts. "Jap" is an ethnic slur directed towards people of Japanese nationality rather than an abbreviated form of the word "Japanese". So just a suggestion that it might be more polite to use the word "Japanese" instead of "Jap" in our posts...who knows...Matsutani may one day decide to be an FO member

Ahhhhh....

But does that mean I can't use "Brits", "Limeys", "Yanks", "Kiwis", "Poms" and the multitude of racial or nationality inclined shortforms that people of the paler persuasion generally use to describe each other?.....

Its the thought behind the word that matters I reckon....

All tongue in cheek of course chaps...

Saimee ,

When spoken verbally one can tell whether it is meant for joke or for malice but in forum sometimes the state of mind of the reader may dictate how such derogatory nicks are received , I think we should avoid it , if possible at all and if one wants to use it between 2 individuals , better put it in a private message .

Agreed , some nicks like Brits and Kiwis aren't derogatory at all in fact some of my NZ friends are proud to say they are kiwis but there are other nicks
that are not " innocents " and some are down right derogatory .
