| Super Moderator | leader or no leader? Hoping that the hardcore lurers here can help me out... sometime ago, I had a 9' G-Craft seabass rod and I had problem with my line tangling at the guides very often. Back then, I was using a 30lb wind on leader and I'm guessing the wind on had a lot to do with the messy tangles which often resulted in lost lures. Recently a friend told me he actually fished without leaders (straight braid) and that sounded pretty neat. Last Friday night I went lure casting and used 3" of wire with no wind on leader. I did not encounter any line tangling around my guide the whole night. However, I wasn't using that 9' seabass rod. It was a 6' spinning rod and I'm wondering I can avoid tangles on my current 9'6" Shimano seabsss rod if I didn't use a wind-on. Would like to hear from the experienced lurers here |

| Moderator | Re: leader or no leader? Yo mike I am also using straight wire to braided for my Toman fishing.... So far no problem on the casting....Juz attached a swivel in between. But I think I have more bites on using leader instead of wire... Tried using FG knots but keep getting wind knot...So I switch to using the swivel method. So far So good Cheers jason

My Mood: Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Re: leader or no leader? Wind knots are more common on wind on leader using long rods, I've the same problem when using a 8'3" Diawa rod for EGI. Just reduce the poundage & length of your wind on & you'll get lesser wind knot problem. My reasoning is that the braid & mono line travel thru the guide at different speed due to different friction, in theory the line will have a longer period of time "in" your rod as compare to a shorter one, thus the difference in speed for the 2 different lines are amplified, so longer rod are more prone to wind knots. Unless your lure is heavy and not affect much by the wind that cause slack in your line, i.e. poppers. Jeff |

My Mood: Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Re: leader or no leader? just one question for the thread starter, are you using shock leader or just normal leader? casting or spinning outfit? currently I am using Triumph 30 FC shock leader for my baitcaster luring outfit, one end connects to the main line with FG knot and other end to a swievel, so far have not encounter any problem with wind knot problem at all. My leader lenght is extremely long, more 3 meters, goes all the way in to the spool. only once i have encounter breakage during a cast, and it was the mainline that broke, not the leader or rig. | Super Moderator | Re: leader or no leader? hi JigW, what's a PR knot? Rain, I fish wind-on leaders on my bc outfit too. No issues there. It's when I'm fishing the longer, softer tipped seabass spin rods that I get trouble with guide tangles. Is it possible to get wind knots on BC outfits? Honestly I haven't heard of it happening. Also, is there a diff between shock leader and normal leader? Its all leaders right? Thanks again to everyone who responded |

| Senior Member | Re: leader or no leader? Line comes out as coil in spinning reel , the bigger the spool the bigger the coil while in baitcasting reel , the line comes out in a straight line , that is the difference . Jon . |

Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Re: leader or no leader? Yoh Mikey, PR knot is the "Public Relations" knot :P ...........Just kidding...Its just another neater and more slick knot that works similiar to the FG, but I have more confidence on this knot than the FG after putting it through some relatively rough use......Its also easier to tie if u have the bobbin tool.......What I find using this knot is that I had no entanglement with the guides despite several days of casting..... | Moderator | Re: leader or no leader? Considering how much I wander by the Plat site, I'm suprised that I missed the bobbin sequence. I like the illustrations and it seems to me that the PR knot is pretty much a midknot, except for the final sequence, where you tighten the braid over the leader after the first 6 half hitches, then burn the leader tip, before continuing to tie half hitches up to and over the end of the melted leader and then continue your half hitches in the usual way over the braid only section. I will give it a go... I don't have the bobbin, but I have created a midknot tying rig of my own just for fun. Regards, Saimee

Any plans for a fisherman's chair where you can store live prawns + build in MP3 player/speakers + fan + rod holder? Last edited by stickbom! : 28-02-2007 at 12:00 AM. | |

Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Re: leader or no leader? Actually u can tie the knot just using any rod building thread bobbin and a thread spool that has been modified to be slightly heavier.....There is already a heavier metal spool being sold in the market for use with ordinary thread bobbins, this is probably a cheaper option.........The good thing about this knot is that it is so much faster and easier to tie and you dont quite have as much fear of the PE letting go as compared to an hastily tied FG.... Aiyoh, You forgot the most important thing lar.......the fishermans chair must have massage chair lar.......this sort of important thing also can forget!! Tsk tsk hiyah!!! PR knot easy to tie lar, half the time needed to tie FG only bcos you dont need to spend so much time ensuring the PE digs into the mono........no need good eyesight......just need metal spool or super expensive bobbin.... | Super Moderator | Re: leader or no leader? Yo Rain, I believe shock leaders/leaders... as long as you're talking about nylon type leader... are the same thing. Only diff is prob how you use them. FYI FC isn't exactly the best for taking shock but since you have good results with them, I guess there's nothing wrong with using it. Blackmax you talking about those leaders that surf anglers use? I haven't seen them around much since Anglers Supplies closed down. I'm taking a chance with a super short piece of FC or wire leader for the time being. If I don't any guide tangles on my Salty Shot 906, think I'll be sticking to this set up for good. Good point there DFM... lets hope the one giving me that back rub looks like the one below Thanks again for all your precious input Last edited by stickbom! : 28-02-2007 at 07:17 PM. |
