Leaded or unleaded for you?

Have you guys tracked the prices of lead sinkers nowadays? I was quite surprised by the increases - over 50% in some shops! Makes me wonder if the humble lead element is that rare nowadays.

We should start looking for alternatives; if the petrochemical world has bio-ethanol & bio-diesel to compete with it, what would be the alternative for lead? Spark plugs and stainless steel nuts & bolts ??

Cheers,
Sunburned

Stainless steel is too expensive for sinkers dude...

BRC or the scrap iron rebar used in construction is good, if you can get eyes welded on them. Plus, a long cylindrical shaped sinker sinks faster, drifts less in the current and doesn't snag so easily. Down side of rebar is rust stains....

Use leaves to wrap the stone and lower down to the bottom....

Back to native ways of fishing where lead are even used at all....

Cheers

How about using (used) condoms filled with sand? Its a virtually free alternative, and at the same time is a good way of recycling otherwise useless spent condoms.............

Tyres I've heard of, but bubble gum?

The BRC idea is a good one. Plenty around from the en-bloc sale property sites nowadays... Now where's my blowtorch...

Here's another idea - retired jiggers, donate your jigs to the Bottom Fisho's Association and earn some brownie points.

Hi Sunburned,

You can also try Araldite-ting wire loops to anything heavy you can find - stones, rebar, etc. You should also add a swivel to the wire loop if the weight is irregular in shape, as it is more likely to spin in the water. Best that this type of sinker is not used for surfcasting unless you are really confident in your araldite glue This is one of the most environmentally friendly method of making sinkers.

Cheers,
Clarence

Hi Clarence,

How's the going been in NZ? Have you been slaying the local fish population on S.S. Sooshee? Thanks for the araldite tip - I'll keep you posted if the experiment works out.

Cheers,
Sunburned
