Handcarry fishing Rods

Hi all,

I'm thinking of taking a light 2pc baitcasting rod with me on board Jetstar to Bali. I'm hoping on handcarrying this instead of checking it in and having to load this small tiny rod into a large bazooka tube.

Anyone have experience on doing this? Is it feasible? What about with other airlines?

Mine are G Loomis Travel rods in 2pc. or 3 pc. version , I bring them into the cabin each time I fish overseas or remote areas in Indonesia . Haven't had any problem so far with the rods inside the tube they come with originally .

The 3 pcs. one ( 7' rod ) is around 750 mm long and will fit into the smaller jet plane's overhead carry-on luggage compartment , the 2 pcs. ( 6'6" rod ) is
around 1000 mm and will fit into bigger jet plane's overhead carry-on luggage compartment . So far I have never been refused by airline staffs but not sure with Singapore airport though , I know domestic Indonesia is no problem and likewise Thai Airlines to and from Bangkok .

Best not to risk it on international flights, especially on budget airlines. Extra baggage charge is a valuable revenue source for such airlines so they may just decide to make you pay for it or make your trip start off on a sour note if you end up arguing with them at the gate

For regular airlines, you should also be aware that frequent flyers often get some leeway, so what may work for some may not work for others. With the ever increasing security driven regulations on air travel baggage, best is to check-in everything imho. It is not difficult to fashion a small & handy DIY check-in rod carrier for muiti-piece rods out of ABS tubing. If you have a 3 pcs rod & it fits into your carry-on bag, I guess you may still get away with it. If you are not sure, the best thing is to show it to the check-in staff & get their OK in black & white, if possible, so as to avoid probelms at the gate.

Now with the tightening of security even going to Batam by ferry at HarbourFront we were asked to check-in the 2 pc. rod. Can't imagine that, happened to me a forthnight ago, we went together with the Union people for an outing at the KTM resort.

Sigh.......
