Giant trevally!

Hi Lads,

I just had a browse on caranx..... forum and there is a report from someone who fished in Mauritius.

There was a 200lb GT caught.... Correct me if I'm wrong this is a GT of nearly 91kg! That is an awesome beast!

I thought the IGFA record were about less than 75kg but I'm aware that IGFA doesn't suggest that the fish caught is the biggest caught on rod and line.

Is this possible to have GT's to 90Kg. The biggest I heard was a from a fisherman locally was in Rodrigues and he fought that on a handline! 150LB, my friend described how he fought it and at last a guy had to harpoon the fish to get it to the boat!!! this was about 15 years ago. About 69kg.

Re: Giant trevally!

Hi Jacktrevally,

I remembered someone posted a pic not too long ago of a Japanese angler who caught a 78kg GGT (Giant-GiantTrevally) popping shore-based at Tokara??? Island! I think the GGT was landed within the last 2-3 yrs, so i guess GTs do grow to XXL sizes and they are still around should you be lucky enough to land one

Re: Giant trevally!

Thanks for the feedback...

I just seen a mistake in the post I made, in Mauritius 1lb is 500g! Those who have traded in Mauritius can confirm... 2lb makes 1kg in Mauritius...

150lb should be 75kg!

Re: Giant trevally!

no offence bro, but this pic looks rather 'not so real', the way the guy lift up the fish like so easy and the fish is so straight. I can carry a 30kg fish comfortably, but after fighting it.........let alone a fish that size. just my 2 cents.

Re: Giant trevally!

Sometimes the angle of the picture taken may not tell you everything. He may have his knee up and two hands under the gill cover lift it up but the fact is they do get that big. Another thing is the spear shaft in the head...they get this big becoz they have avoided hooks and lines but to spearfisherman........

Check out the freedive.net for more info on the pic.

Hi eriond,

Actually, it is possible. Hardcore freedive spearfishing fishermen are a super duper fit bunch of athletes. One of the things they focus on when spearfishing is to try their best to get a "kill shot" when going for their quarry. Because they freedive, they cannot afford for the fish to pull them to the depths. Their lives depends on it. A kill shot will also stop the target from struggling which may attract sharks. I had the pleasure of meeting some of these hardcore world class freediver fishermen before and one of them is a former world champion. He is a Singaporean living in California. It is really amazing how dedicated & fit they are.

If you look at the photo, the spear has been left in the fish to show that it was a very good kill shot -- right in the brain of the fish. When that happens, the fish drops dead right in it's tracks with no fight whatsoever. The person also seems to be leaning back to take the weight of the fish, so it is not actually with that much ease Aside from being strong & fit, he was also probably running on adrenalin from the excitement of securing such a big catch so lifting the fish even of that size with apparent ease is possible. I am not saying your doubts are unfounded, just offering a different perspective.

Best regards,
Makaira

Re: Giant trevally!

I've just checked freedive.net, there is a world record at 65.4 kg... it looks like it's the same guy but a different pic!
