| Senior Member | GameFishing - A Hobby or A Sport? Since my last trip to offshore fishing in Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia, I have been invited to join some of my kakis on "bigger" gamefishing and longer trips, 5days4nights LOB(Live On Board). Fishes expected will be in excess of 20kgs and above.... As the sheer size of the targeted fishes, i would need heavier fishing gears in terms of poundage. Some questions already came to my mind: 1) Do I have the physical strength to handle the weight of the fishing gears and fish on board for a few days? Will my stamina last so long including handling the rock and roll of the sea? 2) Do I have the physical strength to fight this size of fishes? If YES, how long would i be able to withstand the sheer might and run of this pelagic fishes. If NO, should i go to a gym to work out my triceps and biceps prior to such a fishing trip? This triggers my serious thoughts, GameFishing, is it a hobby or a sport? Or is the gym workout prior to long trips part of the so called fishing hobby of mine? |

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | usually on these types of long fishing trip, most of us will pace ourselves. we don't usually fish for 5d4n straight and will try to catch some rest in between changing of spot or when there are pesky fish below (barracoutas). below are just my 2 cents worth of opinions on your 2 questions. i'm not sure what type of equipment you're using but if you are talking about fishing spot like spratlys or taka then i would assume that the equipment you use are big game reels which can be anything above 1kg (just the reel). as in any LOB fishing, there will be rod holders for you so you won't have to hold your rod and reel the whole day. there is also the gimbal belt for you to aid you in fighting the fish. as for stamina and strength wise, it will depend on individual. i would recommend fishos who go for long range trip especially where the depths are quite deep to go for some weights training workout as it is quite tiring reeling in from deep water and worse if there is a big fish at the other end. i think you worry too much about such things. fishing is suppose to be enjoyable, why stress yourself on all these questions. since its your first time going on long range trip, just go and experience it yourself so you know what to expect should you decide to go for another long range trip. don't put you expectation too high and just go and enjoy yourself. remember to post your catch report when you are back. |

| Moderator | Th2x dude, Relax dude, I'm about as fit a baked potato...... and its worse after Hari Raya.... ughhhhh.... Look at it this way, if your favorite activity also gets you fitter, isn't that an added bonus?. BTW, work on your legs too dude, that will help your worry on the stamina in rock & roll conditions. As for the weight of tackle and related stamina, no worries dude, the beauty of mutliday liveaboards is that you have time to fish at your own pace dude, instead of having to cram maximum fishing time into a few hours and fishing non-stop to make the best of the time available. Standup Harnesses also allow "normal" humans to fish standup heavier tackle comfortably, after all, look around the net and you will see many members of the fairer sex handling big gamefish using these systems. Just try and get your hands on at least one decent "medium-heavy" outfit ranging from a Tiagra 30/ Avet EXW4/02 size- Tiagra 50 sized reel dude, load it with 80-100lb spectra and an equivalent rod. If not many liveaboards should have decent rental gear anyway....depending on where your charter is. Regards, Saimee

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | going fishing is a very stupid thing to do. trust me. 3 days into a 7 days trip, u stink of blood, fish slime, sun tan lotion and sweat. your expensive and state of the art tackle is scratched. you are sunburn, heaty and w/o fish. u begin to wonder why u spend your hard earned money on "the sucker's game". finally, u survived, despite the sea sickness, the nonsense of your fishing kaki and the shitty food. but, somehow, on the journey home, u start to contemplate where your next fishing adventure will take place. trust me, give up while there is still hope. |

As in all hobbies, obesessions and sports, you tend to live for those magical trips and days when everything falls into place and the priceless memories of those catches tends to erase the aches, pains and hardship endured during less successful sessions. As you said its an "adventure" and hell, I still subscribe to the adage that a day, week or month at sea catching fish or not, beats the hell out of spending it in the office.... plus I think that I am an affirmed masochist for sunburn and hammered tackle and I've even developed a mysterious affinity for "Eau de Poisson Slime" , which is fortunately a fetish that is most certainly not shared by She Who Must be Obeyed, if not the house and kids would smell of cod liver oil all the time... jus a few days ago, 27 to 29 oct, i was crammed in a small, slow, smoky, cockroach infested commercial boat w 6 kaki and 3 boatman. the malaysia sun is so freaking hot that i spent 70% of my time dozing of on dirty matress that came straight from the boatman's house (u know wat i mean). the water was 'not right' and the only notable catch was 3-4 500g bottom fish. my kaki, colin, was workin his popper at the FAD. i happen to wake up from my afternoon nap and decided to check out the action. immediately, he shouted, "rainbow runner!". there were a few fish following his popper. they turned out to be a school of mahi. so, i tied on a 4/0 hook, staggered (not totally awake yet) to the front of the boat and took a live kambong from the boatman. swung the bait out a was instantly connected. landed the 1st mahi of my life, 4 kg. then i landed another bull, 7 kg and busted one off. colin and vincent landed one each and jason lost 2. guess in additional to being in the right place at the right time is not enough. u gotta wake up at the right time too. i am going to give up fishing probably in the near future. perhaps after the 2008 maldives trip that i am trying to put together. then, i will sell all my tackle and take up some more exciting and refined hobbies like international chess, knitting, classical music ... ... | Senior Member | Guys , Sound like someone is getting old , I just turned 57 yrs old and still fishing but not as often however when I fish , creature comforts are important and the pace is somewhat slower albeit I still welcome a 60 kg GT anytime or 200+ kg marlin .... from chair ! Fishing is in my blood and when time my body can't handle the strain of offshore fishing stand up style , there is always fighting chair , more forgiving rods or even freshwater fishing . Don't want to stop while I am still alive n able to cast , reel and pump ! Sportfisherman . |
