Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Color of Fishing Hooks Myth??? Dear All, Can anyone advise on the color of the hooks that are used, will it affect bite rate?? Have heard that during day fishing (bottom), "Red hooks are the best choice (as they do not reflect light), followed by black, matt silver then silver (very reflective, lowest bite rate)"..... Not sure what I,ve heard is correct so hope anyone can share experience if you can, don't want to be misled by hearsay.... Thanks Cpew |

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | Re: Color of Fishing Hooks Myth??? Hi, Have used hooks of all shapes, sizes & colours over the years and I have to say that the only real revolution as far as hooks are concerned for hook & line recreational anglers is the circle hook. As far as hook colour is concerned, have not noticed any difference in bite rates across the colours available. There are of course those who swear that red hooks work better by far The reason why the colour "red" is of particular interest is due to two main reasons. Firstly, red is the colour of fish blood & therefore anglers assume that it will help hide the hook in baits Secondly, red is the first colour in the colour spectrum that "disappears", or rather, gets filtered out as one goes deeper in the water. As such, people assumes red hooks are less likely to be seen by the fish. In actual fact, anything red does not "magically disappear", it just turns to a shade of grey ....... so go figure. Actually, the red colour on the hooks available in the market falls off in no time at all to reveal a gold base anyway Best regards, Makaira |

| Moderator | Red to Gold Mak, I actually like the gold base finish on the red hooks, 'cos it lasts really well and does not corrode easily, which is why I like red Gamakatsus... I too haven't found any difference in the effectiveness of hook colours. In the end there may be some differences in actual visibility, i.e. brighter/lighter colours as opposed to duller/darker ones, but aside from really exceptional situations like those with gin clear water and reallllyyyyy shy fish, I don't think it matters. Leader visibility probably matters a hell of a lot more. Regards, Saimee |
