Interesting....where do you guys fish with Ah Cheng?? Cannot be his usual haunt at Jong Fairway I bet.....salty rubbers will never make it to the bottom given how strong the currents there are

Anyway, next week new moon got nice change in current around midnight looks like good window for Ang Chos

Can ....... tie it to a ranggong with the requisite length of leader & the appropriate size sinker I do that successfully with my squid jigs when them critters refuse to surface or are nowhere in sight; but baits come back with clear signs of squids feeding on them.

Nice idea. Have seen some guys do this at HB but I always forget to bring squid jigs along when going on a bottom trip Never fail to pack them in for Rompin though

Re: Any keen to join me for a Salty Rubber-ing expedition?

Guys, I usually fish at Cheng's normal drift spots outside Jurong Island That's where I scored all the fishes with my Salty Rubber. I'm using 14-20lb braids and a short piece of 30-40lb FC leader. 80g SR seems to work okay for me

Re: Any keen to join me for a Salty Rubber-ing expedition?

Bought 3 jigs from Sabre, all 60g (their heaviest). Can't wait to try this slow jigging Octopus.

When can we go?

I have a trip that's filled with 3 baiters and 3 salty rubberers on 1st May Will post results after the trip. If any of the baiters can't make it, I'll slot one of you in.

Re: Any keen to join me for a Salty Rubber-ing expedition?

Brought along the salty rubbers but didn't really spend much time trying,
was concentrating on light jigs. But my friend caught two groupers on SR.
Will post the pics once i got it from him. Overall result was so so. Caught a
12pound ebek and some coral trouts on metal jigs.

Re: Any keen to join me for a Salty Rubber-ing expedition?

Hi Mike,

Where else can I get the 80 to 100gm SR for my coming Pengibu trip? I was not able to find them in Saber Tackle yesterday, and also bumped into Ah Cheng there. Indeed he was very impressed with your recent SR exploits and sounded like a converted fisho from live prawns. I asked him where to get the heavier SR, he added that you probably had cornered the local SR market??

As the depth in Pengibu is about 60m, I will probably try Mak's method of using a rangong with the SR attached to FC line; otherwise it will have problem touching bottom with its non-streamlined shape. Btw the 2 hooks on the Duel’s SR appeared to be quite flimsy, are you sure they can tahan the rude pull of the parrots or green eyes? With the 2 hooks attached, will it get sangkok easily?

I like the look of your "re-conded" SR … definitely looks very hiag to any virile creatures down there.

Tight lines
TM

PS. How do you add those smiley icons in the message? Every time I tried to add one, it goes beside the title??

Re: Any keen to join me for a Salty Rubber-ing expedition?

Sabre is out of 80g SR. Angler's hut has 80g but limited colours (dark grey, orange, green). Price was slightly higher than Sabre but the lady at Sabre says no new stock coming for 2-3 mths......

Hi TM,

Actually, you don't have to stick to the SR. Here something I've tried with success in the past. Use a ranggong & leader as per bottom fishing, but instead of a regular hook & bait, use any rubber lure, for example the Storm rubbers. It may not be as sexy as the Madai, it is definitely much more economical, and I am pretty sure it will catch you fish. Work it in the current, cranking it up a few feet off the bottom & then let it back down again. You'd be surprised how successful it can be. To enhance the effectiveness of the artificials, perhaps you can smear some of those scent additives available these days, or even dip in in tuna oil first. I've even caught yellowfins & doggies using storm-type rubber lures in the Coral Sea.

As for the smilies, you have to click the ones on the right of the page, not the ones on the bottom.

Best regards,
Makaira

Re: Any keen to join me for a Salty Rubber-ing expedition?

Richard, try Sea Tackle. They have heaps of SR but it cost a little more there. By the way, if you're planning to fish the SR with your Amberjack Special/Saltiga-Z40 combo... then you better stick to Makaira's suggestion of using Ranggong + B2 Stealth Squid or Berkley Gulp Squid. The SR is designed for lighter tackle like heavy overhead bass outfits and lighter lines. I'm fishing PE1.5 or 20lb braid at most with 30lb nylon leader or 40lb FC. The hooks need to be changed for sure... Layman lost a pretty decent fish on the factory hooks Come Tuesday Layman will have a pair of 11/O Owner gorilla hooks trailing behind his Salty Rubber

By the way, if the skirt on your SR gets chewed up... just go buy the cheapest buzz bait you can find and use the skirt from there. I was too lazy to venture into JB (these lures are popular with Toman anglers in M'sia) so I bought a Smith from AO and stripped it LOL

Re: Any keen to join me for a Salty Rubber-ing expedition?

Mikey, when is the next all SR trip? Ah Cheng just called me and told me he will be out of town for the next whole week. Will test the SR in Changi again. Hope to catch something bigger this time round. Wish me luck.

Re: Any keen to join me for a Salty Rubber-ing expedition?

I tested the salty rubber (80gm pink head) drift fishing at the rock wall encircling Tanah Merah last Saturday. Got 2 chocolate hinds on them. 2 Baiters with me got no hook ups. Eventually lost it to the legs of a beacon.

Sighted a large pod of dolphins 200m off the canal entrance of that place where is supposed to be a water desalination plant.
