Re: Anambas????

i went there in 2002 and 2003. not sure any charter goes there as fuel and water will be a big issue. i think that place is full of potential as i had seen the locals went out with sampans at night and came back in the morning with lots of fish enough to fill 2-3 48qts icebox.

Re: Anambas????

A fleet of abt 17-20 SG private boats (including sail boats) will be having an expedition to Anambas from 28 Apr - 6 May organised by Raffles Marina. Try contacting Raffles Marina as some boats may still have vacancies or require crew though chances is not high.

Was invited to go with 1 of the sportfisher but facing difficulties applying leave having started on a job for just over a month. Had requested the sportfisher to take pics of their Catch Report & will post them upon receipt.

Anambas is abt 200 nautical miles(360 Km) from Singapore via sea route & somewhere around the mid-point between Aur & Natunas gas fields.

A very tempting offer & still pondering whether to proceed to Anambas

For SG anglers who are keen on chartering a SG boat to Anambas, can try locating Ah Heng who owns a 60 footer private fibreglass boat(Nelayana has similar hull) berthed at MCC. However, Ah Heng's boat has modified its fuel tank to accomodate abt 5000L(for range to the Natunas) which makes refuelling a lesser concern. Nelayana has abt 3000L fuel capacity & must refuel before heading home.

P.S.- I do not have Ah Heng's contact no. but those keen can drop by MCC pier no. 1 & ask any charter skipper like Edwin, John H or Anthony should Ah Heng be not around.

There may be some Tj Pinang charter boats(like Ah Kiang) which may have the range to Anambas. Dive charter boats have the range but boat setup are usually not angler friendly.

Based on info provided during the expedition's briefing, there's refuelling facilities for fuel & water at Anambas.

If my memory doesn't fail me, MarkR came across a marine research/dive trip report on Anambas some years back & may be able to provide some info

Re: Anambas????

Hi YS,

Sure hope Raffles Marina found a reliable supplier with CLEAN diesel for the fleet. Otherwise it may be boomstown Charlie for the engine repair bizness in Singapore when the convoy returns with clogged injectors & blown engines

Best regards,
Makaira

Hi YS,

Hope you are keeping well and enjoying your new job

I had some colleagues and friends from NUS who were involved in a biodiversity research expedition to Anambas in 2002. The reports are here:

Ex Anambas & The Biodiversity of the South China Sea

Have not been there but I gather that Anambas has seen a lot of coral damage in recent years from dynamite and cyanide fishing.

Best regards,

Mark

Re: Anambas????

Guys,

I understand that MV Seaborne (RSYC) a dive boat is interested in doing fishing charters. Have dived with MV seaborne once and find it to be quite a comfortable boat with nice bunks. They may offer some competitive packages to test out Seven Skies and Malang Biru for fishing potential. Drawbacks- Obviously a bit slow and the stern is not set up for fishing. Captain would also probably have very limited knowledge of fishing spots/grounds.

Re: Anambas????

Skimmed through the Anambas fish diversity report.

Don't see dogtooth tuna, amberjacks and GTs, guess you might be able to find these 3 species but in lesser numbers for sure...also only one species of tuna/mackeral identified. More of a bottom fishing place rather than a jig/pop area I guess.

Indeed good quality fuel is a big concern while refueling in Indonesia. Should I end up onboard the trip, I'll make sure the boat carries many pcs of fuel filter from 5 - 30 microns & is fitted with fuel filter assembly having water separator/water drain plug. Ideally, engine main fuel filter assembly should have electrical alarm for "clogged filter" or "water contamination".

Doing alright but not really enjoying my new job. More so when such tempting trip offer comes along

Doubt any outboard powered boat has the fuel range. In any case, registration had closed.

Short of a miracle, if a boat gets a batch of contaminated diesel, I don't know if any regular filter systems on most pleasure crafts will help. Our mutual friend's port engine went kaput after the previous owner brought her to Anambas. Hopefully the just completed ultra expensive rebuilt has finally solved the problem It seems like it is akin to playing Russian roulette when refueling in out-of-the-way places. Was told one Singapore boat had their injectors all clogged up after taking fuel south of the border recently.

I see you are super tempted to go on the coming trip

It seems that the place is not so good.......
So, would you guys tell the conclusion here. Is the Anambas/Natuna worth to give it a try or not ?

Lod,

Personally I have never been there and never see any solid Catch Report from that area ... alot of people are just guessing but I heard alot of bad things about bombing cynades style of fishing have been conducted there.

Maybe you could give it a try and provide us a real life account

Remember to post pictures too!

Yeah, I've read about the reef destruction from National Geographic mag. the Anambas/Natuna area is considering a medium risk already. You can also take a look at this link. It's about the reef at risk in S.E.A .....
Images from Reefs at Risk in Southeast Asia

As for the trip it-self, it's always be interesting to try a new spot......
