Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Advice on fishing with a multiplier reel Dear All, First time using a multiplier reel with level wind, need some novice advice What would be the standard way to fish in offshore waters (bottom-fishing) using a multiplier reel? I have establish the drag (1/3 poundage of main lineline) on the reel. When the fishing starts on the boat: 1) I'll cast off the rig (ranggoon) in free spool (remembering to thumb the spool in case of char bee hoon). 2) Once the sinker hits bottom, do I set the reel to retreive (with drag) or still on free spool mode (with clicker on) while waiting for the bite? 3) Correct me if I am wrong, my impression of using the multiplier reel would be that when the fish has taken the bait, the reel should be free spooling with the clicker clicking away, alerting me of the fish's presence. I then pick up the rod from holder, brace myslef and then set reel to retreive with a strike and engage the drag to tire out the fish and bring it to boat side? Just want to get my steps right to using the multiplier reel and not have any cock-ups during my trip!! Thanks in advance to all that replied |

[edy] Crank 2 to 4 times. 3) Correct me if I am wrong, my impression of using the multiplier reel would be that when the fish has taken the bait, the reel should be free spooling with the clicker clicking away, alerting me of the fish's presence. [edy] my style for bottom fishing is to set the reel at strike position. If it is a hook up and fish start to run (big fish) the clicker will scream!!!!! Have fun. Cheers, Edy |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Dear Edy, In question for your advice, while waiting for fish, the reel is not set at free spool mode? Thanks again. |

Imagine how can you last for if your mainline = 100lb 2) Once the sinker hits bottom, do I set the reel to retreive (with drag) or still on free spool mode (with clicker on) while waiting for the bite? Like Edy said, I would crank few times and engage the gear near to "strike" position. It depend on species also, if targeted species like parrot fish, strike position will do 3) Correct me if I am wrong, my impression of using the multiplier reel would be that when the fish has taken the bait, the reel should be free spooling with the clicker clicking away, alerting me of the fish's presence. I then pick up the rod from holder, brace myslef and then set reel to retreive with a strike and engage the drag to tire out the fish and bring it to boat side? For bottom fishing, normally engage to strike position. The method you applied above very good for sailfish hunting. |

At least the clicker must "on" when the spool totally free. These apply on most bottom fishing. For top water might be different method. Quote:
