The shark is 10 meters long and 1.5 meters wide with a total weight of five tons or so. A businessman passing by purchased it at the price of over 100,000 yuan right after the capture. People's Daily Online -- Five-ton blue shark captured in east China This does not look anything like a blue shark from the pic's to me. Something this big it is hard to tell.

I remember watching a Natgeo or Discovery channel documentary that told the story of a fishing village that survived on hunting basking shark for a living. With hardly any sharks left to catch, only a few people live there now to continue hunting the Basking Shark. They set the nets every day & may catch only few each year. I believe they are hunted mainly for the liver which makes good oil for industrial / commercial applications. |

I have seen them while fishing from the shore in North West England and South west Scotland and have seen a lot on the boat in the English channel during the summer months. I actually foul hooked one (deliberately) in it's dorsal while fishing from my local pier when I was about 14 years old. It didn't know it was hooked and the hook fell out after about 5 minutes. 2 days later a fishing boat brought a basking shark in which had got tangled in it's nets (possibly the same shark as it was a similar size and we don't get too many round our way). It was 18 feet long and weighed 1.8 tonnes. Cheers Dave |
