5 ton shark caught in China

Fishers use a crane to load the giant blue shark on May 23, 2007.A giant blue shark was captured by a fisher in east China's Jiangsu Province on the afternoon of May 23. The shark is 10 meters long and 1.5 meters wide with a total weight of five tons or so. A businessman passing by purchased it at the price of over 100,000 yuan right after the capture.

This does not look anything like a blue shark from the pic's to me. Something this big it is hard to tell.

Don't think it is a blue shark. Looks like a Basking Shark which is an endangered species.

Fully agree with Mak,

Its a Basking shark indeed. These sharks are normally found in the North Sea off Scotland.

Yes they are found there ... or rather were found there in great numbers until unregulated fishing decimated their numbers. I remember watching a Natgeo or Discovery channel documentary that told the story of a fishing village that survived on hunting basking shark for a living. With hardly any sharks left to catch, only a few people live there now to continue hunting the Basking Shark. They set the nets every day & may catch only few each year. I believe they are hunted mainly for the liver which makes good oil for industrial / commercial applications.

Re: 5 ton shark caught in China

For sure a basking shark but a huge one - much bigger than any I have seen!

I have seen them while fishing from the shore in North West England and South west Scotland and have seen a lot on the boat in the English channel during the summer months.

I actually foul hooked one (deliberately) in it's dorsal while fishing from my local pier when I was about 14 years old. It didn't know it was hooked and the hook fell out after about 5 minutes.

2 days later a fishing boat brought a basking shark in which had got tangled in it's nets (possibly the same shark as it was a similar size and we don't get too many round our way). It was 18 feet long and weighed 1.8 tonnes.

Cheers

Dave
