hahaha... pardon the title of my thread but I'm just curious to know what would the hardcore bottom bashers of this forum use if you're bottom fishing at 300m deep Targets would be big ruby snappers/ big groupers/ AOS (any other species)

I was told that 2 speed reels are the way to go when fishing such depths so that rules out the possibility of reels like the Jigger, Oceanus, Saltiga, Boss, Baja Special I'm eyeing the very affordable Tyrnos 30 2-speed and plan to swap out the handle for a Area Rule T-Bar... what do you think guys? After the change of handle, the Tyrnos would be around $600... anything better to recommend at +/- $50?

By the way, we plan to drop 100lb class, 3 hook apollo rigs to 300m... just for the fun of it.... thats how I got the title 300 for this thread. Thanks for reading!

I got no standard, with depth of 200m, I already surrended after a few drop for bottom fishing.

So I will use the boatman electri reel or my kakis one to fish for bottom.

By dropping the line I can take a few puff before it reach bottom..

What about that Torium 50..... AVET 50 Narrow?....

Last time we hit 1100+ft last weekend, we were running the AVET EXW4-02 on 80lb braid. Those electric reels look really good when you go past 600ft deep dude.

The last time I bottom-fished 300m depth was in Tiao Yee Tai, Taiwan, with a 2-speed Tiagra16. My gossh it took me more than 15 mins to reel up the line and I was always the last one to do so whenever the boat wanted to move off. From the tone of the boatman, I could feel that he was quite annoyed with this bloody slow ‘tortoise’ cranking at the stern of the boat. To add injury to insult, I couldn’t lift up my right arm the following day. Therefore, I reckon that an electric reel would be quite suitable for anything more 100m, like Sabah. However prior to this experience, I was always teasing someone taking the fun out of fishing with an electric reel.

Btw I was just playing with the Daiwa’s MT750 2-speed electric reel in my office; with a modified slim power pack. I was quite impressed that it could be programmed to jig with various actions … from doing the Waltz, to the Tango and to the Rock & Roll with selected strokes and time intervals. Since I couldn’t quite understand the Japanese instructions on the LCD display, I have yet to explore whether it is capable of imitating the Masutani or AG’s jigging style.

In the past, I have always been lazy and waited for my buddy to prompt me when the fish is taking the jig. Now with this new toy, there’s no prize for guessing that I am planning to test the water electrically before executing manual jigging with the 4000P ... we are all reminded to go green or energy conscious these days.

I concur with Saimee. If you are willing to dish out $600+ for a 2 speed reel, Why bother with the Tyrnos? Look at the Avet -- full metal jacket plus twin drags to boot. You can also search around for a second-hand blueprinted Penn 50 or 50W or even a Tiagra 30 or 50. IMHO, the Tyrnos will not be as robust as those mentioned above.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, game reels are not my first choice for deep bottom bashing as you will end up fishing in low gear to gain any significant line to begin with when on a fish. Dude ....... imagine cranking at a 1:1 ratio for most of the 300m. You do the math. For depth over 200m, I use the regular 665. Saimee's suggestion of the Torium 50 or the Saltist equivalent should work just as well.

Towkay had 1000yds of 80lbs Red Power Pro on his 3/0 wide version.

A true Spartan would use a hand line

On a more serious note, my first choice would be an electric reel...otherwise, I would opt for a 2-speed for extra drag power and savage cranking ability on low gear given the type of monsters you may encounter at this depth.

thanks for the input guys... I'm hoping to borrow a gold milo tin for this suicide mission actually... just in case I can't get hold of one... I may need to buy one.

Actually the electric Miya Epoch CX4 (I think) has been doing some serious deep water damage over here.... sighhhhh, soon no fish left.... even 3 12kg+ groupers were not enough to make it break a sweat in 600ft of water....

Mike.....i did not try 300m.......The most i did try was 260metres in spratly. You can forget about some of the reels u mentioned below as most of it has been tested for the trip. I sincerely recommend 2-speed reels if going for that depth.

Avet EX 4/O - Not a well-balance cranking reel (Tends to sway left n right)
Penn Inter 30SW (Handle needs to lengthen - Not bad)
